This AccuScore video suggests the Detroit Lions will significantly improve their chances of winning Sunday night at Candlestick Park if they can force San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith into at least two uncharacteristic interceptions.

Smith hasn't thrown an interception in eight consecutive games, including the postseason, and has the league's longest active streak of consecutive passes without an interception (253).

The Lions, meanwhile, didn't have an interception in their Week 1 victory against the St. Louis Rams and might not have either starting cornerback for this game. Bill Bentley (concussion) has already been ruled out, and Chris Houston (ankle) is doubtful.

Of course, interceptions are only partly a function of defensive back play. A heavy pass rush can also force a quarterback into mistakes. Before this streak, Smith had never gone more than three games without an interception. The Lions might argue he's due.
